Input of Focal length of lens via adapter on Sony A7?
« on: January 05, 2015, 10:51:08 pm »

Is there a way to input the Focal Length of a lens that is connected via an adapter?  I am connecting Leica Leitz Lens that do not have the 6 bit updates (too old). When viewing the photos on the computer the lens info is blank. Or do I have to resort to an analog method (index card w/ lens info)?  That is not something I want to do as I'm sure I will forget to do it.

if your camera features it, you can do a small audio file and it will playback in Post

No adapter I'm aware of transmits any lens data on Leica lenses

In all other ways the Voighlander VM/E rocks!

I'm guessing the new A7ii allows for specifying focal lengths since it has built-in stabilization. There's no way to do this with an A7r, though. Likely the same is true for the A7s and original A7.

You might want to look into the Phigment adapter.

It is the only adapter that I am aware of that records the focal length of the lens and the aperture in the EXIF data.

I am not sure whether you can input it though for non-coded lenses...

This is just what I want to do.  The lens that I have are too old to even be retro fitted with the 6-bit info.

Hi Dave, you can input the focal length but Sony chose not to carry this info over into the exit data. It's only used as an input to the IBIS.

there is no way to register aperture on old Leica lenses but I think you can mark the flange and get some kind of feedback I think

Check out Reid Report. A subscription service he does things like this

With that said, I still don't think adopters know how to look or record anyway

Figures…same goes for Olympus.  ::)

Have you considered writing the focal length to the EXIF data manually, using Exiftool? I do this for third party lenses used on the 5D2 and the a7r.

Good light!

They need the space for more important data, like the battery temperature.

There must be a whey for the camera to do this ... i.e. the leica does know what lens I put on the Leica body and there are no electronics there.  I do know that there are differences in the lens flange.  Too bad this can't be transfer some how ... well here is to wishin' ...

There is an adapter that can read the Leica 6 bit code from the lens flange and transfer it to the camera. Try Googling "phigment adapter". Of course, that won't help if you have no way of adding the 6 bit code to your lenses.
