since this firmware upgrade will be in older cameras ( if you want to call D800s' old ), it indicates that it could be done in other recent cameras as well.  Looking at you, Ricoh, and my 645Z.

Everybody "could" do it. It's "just" one more firmware feature to add.
They could even add RGB parade like on video cameras.

indeed, anything is possible in the wonderful world of software... ;)

Besides, once you have raw histogram, how hard can it be to do automatic 2 shots ETTR "bracketing"?

I don't see why you need the histogram, if you have an electronic shutter you can just take three shots fast 0, -7; +7 and dump them in the buffer. - at base ISO that will give you huge DR.
