Problem importing RAW files

I am on an extended trip, relying on my laptop for use of CC LR and PS2014. I am having a problem with LR import. So far as I can tell PS CC is OK. This is a new problem, earlier in my trip things were fine with LR CC. Now, the Import module file browing widget does not see the folder user/<username> and its subdirectories, making RAW import impossible. The operating system is win 8.1

Is this a known problem with a solution?

Not heard of that one. 

Just to eliminate issues like folder permissions, try copying one or more raw files manually to the folder in \users\<username>...  Copy the file(s) into a folder you're already used in Lightroom.  Then in Lightroom, right-click the folder name and choose "Synchronise Folder..."  Does it show the new image(s) with "Import new photos (1)" (or however many you copied)?  If so, and the import works, Lightroom can read/write to the folder.
