Golden Hour on the Cahaba River
« on: December 25, 2014, 11:30:25 pm »

Earlier this week I visited this location with a certain shot in mind. When I initially visited, the sky was overcast, and the light was dull. However, I thought I saw potential in the location under a different type of light. Today, when I arrived at the location, I was surprised to see that the water level had risen several feet. The original shot I had envisioned was not possible at today's water level, so I searched for a new shot. After trying several locations, I settled on this one. I was attracted by the light on the tree in the middle of the river, and I thought that the river would be nicely blurred. This image ended up being a 3 shot exposure blend to account for the dynamic range of the scene. Comments and critiques are appreciated.

I like it a lot.
The lighted tree and the flowing river work nicely together.

Well done. I almost didn't open the image file because the thumb didn't look very promising. Boy was I wrong. The bigger this is the better it looks. I was also surprised to read that it is HDR because I don't like HDR but I like this one very much. Very nice work. Congrats!

HDR done properly will never resemble what most folks think of as HDR which is generally in your face gaudy. High Dynamic Range is about capturing the best attributes from a series of shots and belending them into one image. I might suggest you take a look at Sean Bagshaw's tutorial on HDR done the correct way.

I manually blended the images in photoshop using the luminosity mask method. It is tedious, but it is the only method I've tried to create realistic looking HDR.
