One Computer Real Slow Connecting to the Internet?
« on: December 25, 2014, 09:42:38 pm »

Here is a puzzling problem I currently have. i have two iMacs, one notebook, two iPhones and one Ipad, and have no problem connecting to the Internet on any of them but one: iMac 24" (white). All others have 20-30Mbs download and 5-6Mbs upload speeds. They are all using wi-fi. Can not detect any difference in settings on the 24" one, nor diagnostic returns any malfunctioning, and yet the speed is either non-existing or real slow (it starts measuring the speed at speedtest.net, reaches 0.02 - though it should be 20 - and then freezes there). I tried emptying the cache and restarting. Any ideas?

In the meantime, I deleted a preference list (com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist), and reset PRAM ( Command, Option, P and R keys), and it seems to work better now. Speed test results in 20-25/5 Mbs. However, there is still a noticeable initial delay in loading a page.

Safari in 10.6.8 was pretty slow. I see latency on my 10.6.8 machine I don't see on my 10.7.5 or 10.8.5 machines...

Wifi can be pretty fickle so I'd start with checking the strength of the connection you have. Can you replicate the issue ever a wired ethernet connection? Where is this computer located reference the wifi router and the other computers? Is it possible to move your laptop to the same location as this iMac and see if you get a network slowdown or loss of signal quality.

If you are getting poor wifi quality in that location you can try changing channels (especially if your neighbours wifi might be on the same channel), moving the router or getting a repeater.

Other devices (iPhone, iPad) work perfectly ok from the same spot, so it it not location. Thanks for the thought, though.
