Stuck in 2007 Need C1 V8
« on: December 19, 2014, 04:08:25 am »

My MacBookPro is from 2007, can't believe it, well I can when I am starting to struggle to run stuff. So upgrade time. Primarily to run V8 Capture One. I can just run V7 on this box, just, stuck at 10.68 and not able to be updated but with 2GB memory maybe a good job.

So, spec wise and price wise all these come out similar?

MacBookPro 15inch 2.2G i7 512 SSD 16GB   £1800
iMac 21inch  2.9 i5 512SSD 16GB £1750
Mac Air 1.7 i7 512SSD 8GB £1500

I know different beasts but interesting. I mainly use the current box at home and rarely actually move it but a 13inch would be useful.

Questions please:

Are these near enough each other, OK the 13inch can't use 16GB memory which is going to slow C1 but I'm not running a 50MP back!! ?

Which machine, regardless of my choices, but would be nice to think I'm on the right track, is biggest bang for the buck given the application ?

FYI, I'm running a maxed out MacAir, as above.  i7 512SSD, 8gb (your spec above). Use it for tethering a Sony A7r via both Lr (Sony Remote App and a hot folder) and C1 V8 - Sony is USB2 (though this model Air is USB3 should there be an upgraded cam in the future). Calibrated the screen FWIW, it helps but this is not used for critical colour work [/understatement] - mainly lighting, focus and rough&ready first impressions.

Would have been good to have 16gb though with Mac 10.10 memory management, i haven't noticed a speed hit, but again I'm not talking MF size files. I don't think that the 8 v 16 gb ram would have made that much of a difference for tethering. It bugged me when I bought it , but haven't thought about it since.

Ultimately, for me, it was the weight and size that ruled. The MacBookPro is a different beast and ultimately, according to many who've commented on this site, it's even a candidate as a desktop replacement.

Yes I read that under some circumstances the Mac is outperformed by the MacBook, the leapfrog effect.
Your comments are helpful I am running  a p20 back, so not enormous files but if Sony bring out ???? in the new year!

Well, my guess , IF true, is that it'll be in the region of 46MP - that's about double of the recent A7mII so it' would fit in the line up well. The difference from 36 to 46 mp shouldn't be a killer - just stay away from the IQ280's ...

but then C1 is not the only software that needs memory... plus C1 gains from discrete GPU of sufficient power... so I 'd go for 16Gb + dGPU vs 8Gb - iGPU ... oops, totally forgot that in macworld 1800 pounds do not buy you dGPU  :'(

I just picked up an early 2013 2.7Ghz MBP Retina with a HDD and 16GB of memory and an Nvidia GT 650 M for under $1000 USD. I removed the HDD and replaced it with a Samsung 840 EVO 512 GB partitioned into two 256 partitions, one for system and one for data, and plugged in an WD USB 3.0 Passport for the Time Machine. Seagate makes an external Thunderbolt adapter that will accept a 2TB HDD or 1TB Samsung 840 EVO if you need more storage.
This setup will do almost everything that a new 2014 will do except the dual Thunderbolt at a considerable savings. It appears that a newer MBP MAY BE  available in Mid 2015 with the new SM951 2.1Ghz SSDs so my suggestion is to find a good used MBP or wait until mid 2015 for a new unit.
As for CaptureOne V8, I am not happy with their new database implemention although their Raw processing is execellent. I personally find that Lightroom 5.7.1 database is much smoother and imports with less effort.
