Note that all the great island nations have stayed lefties: the UK, Eire, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand ...

....plus most of the former British Empire in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.

However, today's "Irish Times" reports that Ireland is to switch to driving on the right in 2016/17. In the first year, cars and motor bikes will switch and, the following year, lorries and vans will make the change.

Poor Irish. They're so often the butt of jokes from the English. But that is funny.  ;D

...
as a cyclist, riding on the left has a distinct advantage of letting you mount from the curb side of the bike when pushing off into traffic.

As opposed to riding on the right which lets you do the exact same thing?
That is if you can mount from either left or right as needed and as most people can (islands excepted)

Apparently this is what happened when Sweden swapped from left to right. http://www.wired.com/2014/02/throwback-thursday-sweden/

You missed my opening comment that most people prefer to mount and unmount from the left, with both horses and bicycles -- perhaps due to "right-leggedness" that makes most of us more comfortable pushing off with the right foot and swinging the right leg over the saddle.  Note that bicycles have the chain on the right, Even in ride-to-the-right countries, which accommodate the fact that mounting and walking of bikes is usually done on the left, so putting that chain at right reduce the risk of getting chain oil on one's clothes.
