Has the game changed for displays yet?
« on: December 15, 2014, 12:06:52 pm »

It's been six years since I've seriously looked  into new display technology. I hope things have improved since I've been away. I want to replace my 4 megapixel  30" Dell display with something better. I just noticed Apple sells a 14.7 megapixel 5K display for $2,500. Should I be excited? If not, can someone point me in the right direction. It will be used for Photoshop CC. My budget is $4,000 max. I don't need the best, but I do want at least second best.  Thanks.

Not really unless you feel more pixels is a huge big deal. Personally I’d rather have an excellent reference display system that isn’t 4K than a 4K that’s not. But for me, a color critical display system is important. I’d rather have purity of color across the entire display, a system that can be calibrated as I can with my SpectraView software to multiple calibrations, then more pixels on an OK display. You can wait for a 4K NEC SpectraView or just get a non 4K now for a lot less money.

Then what's taking so damn long. I thought computer power doubles every 18 months, or something like that. I'm running out of patience.

Taking so long for what? There’s been superb high end display systems over the years. Anyway, display technology has always been far slower in terms of advances than silicone chip technology. We should have flying cars too and that’s as yet not mainstream.

Then can someone give an educated guest when the market will offer a 4K display that is 97% Adobe RGB (showroom prototypes don't qualify. I'm sure they already exist)?  I want an upgrade now, but I'm willing to hold out 2 years max for the right one. Am I the only one with ants in his pants? It seems everyone is complacent with the old NEC's. I want more!

NEC SpectraView 4K at a reasonable size should be out any time now from what I gather.

NEC PA322UHD that covers 99% of AdobeRGB is already available in EU - it's at least as good as any other PA series display, and in some respect it's even better - for example it features an excellent OCF:

The new NEC looks tempting, but I'm going to wait for an 8K Cintiq 24" pen display that's 99% Adobe RGB. I figure another five years. In the meantime I will use the IMac 5K.  Finally, Apple is selling something worth the price.
