First Post ! IPF6400 - INK
« on: December 06, 2014, 07:25:03 am »

This is my first post.

I thank all comments.

I have a IPF6400, I would like to know about ink consumption with initial setup.

One of GY, of 90ml cartridges, already listed as zero, but the reports of Canon I printed only 40ml.

Where did the other 50ml?

What explanation for this?

The printer continues to print, but would still 50ml in the tank?

How much that is between the cartridge and print head.

Thanks, and sorry for my English.

Hi, the printer uses some ink to fill and prime the ink system. I'm not sure about the 6400, but the 8400 uses about 70ml for initial filling. 50ml sounds about right.
The printer is still printing because it's not completely empty yet. it will stop printing after the meters are at empty. You will not be able to use the 50ml because the printer needs to stay primed.

Thank you,

I'm waiting for the printer stops printing, to be sure how much consumed.

Some people say that it would play out something like 20ml when you boot the first time.

Another question is how often do the calibration?

How much you spend on each calibration, would 20ml?

I saw that there is more than one type of calibration, which would be the most appropriate? the same common?

Thank you,

Abdo

you should do calibration about once a week. depending how important colors are with the prints you are printing. calibration will use less than a small image. i would guess about  .8 ml
from now on your printer won't waste a lot of ink unless you dont use weekly, then it will do cleanings which arent too bad either. worst is filling ink system and replacing heads. you shouldnt have to worry about that for a while though.

I have a IPF 8300 which is very similar. I have never heard of anyone calibrating once a week! Please check around with others. I think for average uses it is more like twice a year.

I had a 6100 for four years and have had my current 6300 for 2 1/2 years.  Great machines.  My experience is that they use far more ink in some colours than others.  For example, with the 6100 these are the numbers of cartridges used over four years.

GY -35
PGY - 13
BK - 9
PM and C - 7
All the others between 4 and 6 carts.

So you can see - make sure you always have a spare GY!  The 6300 seems to follow a similar pattern.

Thanks Smjphoto and Jim.

But the 6300 has a similar performance to 6400.

According to some 6400 would be 20% less than the 6300, but I'm not sure.

Jim,

Do you remember how many times replaced the maintenance cartridge with the 6300?

And also the cutting blade, you changed?

And use the blade to cut canvas?

Thanks

Not sure precisely about the Maintenance tank - maybe three times in four years (on the 6100 - the 6300 is on it's second after 2 1/2 years).  It is not really a significant cost compared to the paper and ink.  Out of interest I did weigh the maintenance tanks I removed - to see how much ink they held.  The first contained 450ml of ink and the second 470ml - on the assumption that 450g equals 450ml.  So if I used three maintenance tanks and roughly 14 litres of ink - about 1.5 litres of that was used in head cleans etc.  The heads were also changed once in that time scale.

Overall the paper was easily the biggest cost, with ink next (106 cartridges), and the cost of buying the printer a distant third.  I consider the printers good value.

The blade has not been changed on either printer - and I have used dozens of 100ft (30m) rolls.  I have not printed a lot of canvas - but again, the cost of a blade must be insignificant overall.

In terms of the maintenance cart, I've gone through way more ink than the previous poster and have never replaced mine.  Not to say that it hasn't filled up, it has, but I used the trick to reset it, and also cleaned it out once.  I would venture to guess that you can easily go through 3 resets before you have to actually clean it.  After the first time it was almost full according to the printer software, so much of the cotton pads inside weren't even dirty.. they were still white!  So having to buy a new maintenance cart is just a huge money grab.  I'm not sure if you can do this on the 6400, but it works just fine on the 6100.

Thank Landscape.

Until'd like to know how to reset the maintenance cartridge.

I live in Brazil and here cost 3x what it costs in the US, in addition to being hard to find.

If you can share how to do, thank you.

Sure thing... here is the link to the procedure.  Works like a charm for the iPF6100... perhaps its the same for the 6400?  Would love to know too.

Epson 7900 follows a similar pattern - Light Black (the equivalent of Canon's Gray) goes much faster than any other color, then Light Light Black and Yellow, then Light Magenta and Light Cyan. For me, the two "odd"colors (Orange and Green) go faster than the dark blacks (I'm printing fairly evenly between Matte and Photo) or the dark Magenta or Cyan (which are the least used colors).  For a user who never used one of the dark blacks, the one that got used would probably move up the hierarchy.
