slideshow crashes LR

I am using LR 5.7 on a PC with 16GB RAM, Windows 7. Images on an external drive.
Every time I run Slideshow either Improptu or from the Slideshow module it crashes LR.
It crashes with the number of images as low as one or more.
Can't remember having this problem before.
Any suggestions?
