Mamiya Digital back pricing
« on: December 15, 2005, 03:33:42 pm »

Hello all:  With the announcement of the Mamiya ZD coming to market soon, I was wondering if anyone has thoughts about the estimated price for the Mamiya digital back.  A couple of years back I decided to move from 35mm to medium format and picked up a Mamiya 645 AFD.  My thinking was take a few years and get use to using this camera and see what happens with digital backs.  Now with Mamiya announcing the ZD for around $10,000, what do you think they will offer the back alone for.  I would guess it would have to be less than the whole ZD, and if the estimated production cost by Dalsa is about $4,000 for the sensor (guessed at by Michael R.) then does $7,000 to 8,000 sound reasonable?  Do you all think Mamiya will only produce the 22 mp back or may they come out with a 16 or 12 mp back.  Of course, like everyone else I will wait and see but its fun to speculate.  If they did come out with a 22mp back for existing 645 AFD cameras and it is around that $7-8,000 figure....what might that do to Phase One prices etc.?  Let me know what you have heard...thanks

I speculate that they will stay with the current sensor size of 48x36mm, and if so, I am sure that pixel count will only go up, not down: the latest sensors in that format are 35MP (Dalsa) and 39MP (Kodak). Expect any "ZD Mark II" to be 35MP.

Moving from separate backs to integrated bodies does eliminate the need for the sensor to be smaller than the film frame (to allow the sensor to fit flush to the film gate in the body), so conceivably, dropping backward compatibility with film could allow sensors to edge up to full 56x42m format. But I doubt it.

Even the smaller MF sensor format of 44x33mm is headed from 17MP to 28MP (Dalsa) and 31MP (Kodak), so 12MP or even 16MP is in the past, not the future.

P.S. About pricing, see this item of news/rumor/speculation, which hints at a price difference of only about US$1,000
