They were shot against a black cloth...does it work?

On my profiled iMac, it looks just fine - better than fine, actually.

There is about a 10% boost in saturation during the "save for web activity.     ;)

Beautiful! I love the lighting and composition, and (fwiw) the colors are perfect, as viewed on my monitor.

The black cloth works for me, the stacking was done well as they appear sharp from front to back.

And even on the uncalibrated shoddy monitor at my workplace....it looks great, well balanced.

That might be. Again, I'm looking on an iPad now and the main reason I comment about the saturation is the green stalk which is "greener" then I recall orchid stalks to be be. The color of the flowers by themselves seems fine.

I buy my orchids at the grocery store at $10 a plant...was amazed at the variety of colors.
If ya see one, you haven't seen them all.      ;D

I was just yesterday in Fairchild Botanical Garden in Miami, lots or orchids around :)
The variety is amazing, I only take their photos for documentary purposes as it's very difficult to have controlled conditions so I appreciate your efforts even more.

Photographers in the Chicago area interested in orchids should check out the upcoming orchid show at Chicago Botanic Garden, Feb 14 to March 15. Last year's show was outstanding and I expect this year's show to be equally good.

Taking the pictures in a controlled environment is no big deal...my problem is the results are clinical in nature.     :-[

Very nice. I do think it works. Here are two of my orchids on black. Also stacked in HeliconFocus:

Bill, someone told me that there are some orchid colors that do not photograph well.  Your purple one is nice, the yellow one...less so.     ;D

Thank you for your comments. The yellow orchid contains out of gamut colors when rendered into sRGB for the web. The original was in ProPhotoRGB and looked OK to me on my calibrated NEC PA241W monitor and printed well on my Epson 3880. I don't know what your viewing conditions are. How would you improve the image?

Bill, I use a calibrated NEC as well...am viewing in IE.  When I intend to save an image for the web, I make a duplicate>flatten>convert profile to sRGB>
drop the saturation 10-15% to help reign in the out of gamut colors>resize and save for web...all in PS CC.

Here's one from this morning using black Plexiglas as a mirror.

A black background for flower shots always works - well, nearly always.

Nice, Tony, although I think the framing is a tad tight.

PS: although Lord Denning did say the words you have in your signature (well, almost: the third word should be "never", not "ever"), he was quoting Thomas Fuller: indeed, he expressly attributed the words.
