Osprey Makes a Hit .... and a Miss
« on: November 22, 2014, 08:48:48 am »

A sequence of an Osprey going for a pick. This is to show that in order to shoot these guys, even 1/4500th to 1/6000th of a second isn't always fast enough to catch all the action. It is a pretty exciting event:

They fly overhead around 150-200 feet up and Scope the area for a potential fish, then Hovering in a near stopped state, mark the prey, and begin the dive, first at high speed, a moment later Slowing enough to make a controlled Entry, and lastly, if lucky impale a nice fish dinner...or as in this case, Miss altogether.

Fun! People post the "hits" so often that I forget they miss as well. We don't see ospreys much. Eagles, yes, and they miss, and more entertainingly, are the laziest birds on the planet, so they steal from each other.

And Ospreys often steal from eagles, at least in Maine.

Great sequence, Chris.

Nice series. I like the last frame best. I like the leap back out of the water.

Later Larry
