Replacing Epson 7900 ... how much is mine worth
« on: November 19, 2014, 04:55:41 pm »

I need to replace my Epson 7900. A portion of the yellow head is blocked. A friend is interested in purchasing the unit for spare parts. What would you say is a fair price?

Always a good question, but basically what you both think is good. (win/win). You can spend hours etc looking up sales reports, forums etc., but it is what it is to you. A friend, even a harder decision. Talk it over and agree. Then there are no heart aches, and you still have a friend.

Thanks Martin. Very good answer. But I don't even know where to begin. Do you feel that $1,000 is too much for a 7900 with a bad head? Would you say that $500 is more in line?

An factory refurbished Epson 7900 with 1 year warranty, ink, and shipping is about $2400. A new printhead is about $1700. I can't imagine a 7900 with a bad head would be worth more than $500.

I recently dumped my old Epson 7900 on the rubbish tip after the second printhead died. I kept the ink though. I wouldn't have even felt good about giving it away as it had done so much work. I was pleased to see the end of it to be honest. I then bought a new one.

I wonder about the "buying it for parts" idea.  By the time they need a part off it, that part (head?) may be shot or beyond plugging, the motherboard probably has a battery for the ROM and if it dies, maybe so does the motherboard?  Only thing that might be worth anything would be the motors and they rarely seem to fail.  Rubber parts will be shot and hardened.  Belts shots.  Some plastics may turn to goo.  Etc.  Storing it might cost them more than its worth too.

I've known people who sell cars "As is" and they've been dragged to court over some non-disclosure issue and one car dealer refuses to put cars older than 5 years old on his lot for much the same.  We had garage sales in the past and people will come back over some idiotic thing like a broken shoelace on a $1 sneaker like it had a warranty, so we no longer do that stuff.

Might be good idea just to have them take it away free.  Can't come back to haunt you later.

Another option for an Epson x900 with at least 6 functioning print head channels is go convert it into a Piezography monochrome printer:

Great idea Cybis. Thanks. I'll pass this along to my friend.

I wish that I had room in my studio for a dedicated B&W machine. But I don't, and my wife wouldn't be up for me to setting these things all over the house. Additionally, I wouldn't want to try to keep TWO of them clog free.

And finally, I LOVE your aerial B&W work. Simply beautiful. I've looked into aerial shooting in the Death Valley/Owen's Valley area. But ... using tripods from a moving object is kind of counter to aerial shooting. LOL

Fortunately this is a good friend, and I don't see him dragging me to court. So that's not a big concern. If he ever felt that I was screwing him, I would make it right, rather than loosing the friendship.
