Will Lr6 be 10bit/color channel?
« on: November 18, 2014, 09:10:03 am »

With UHDTVs and similarly capable monitors appearing that have 10bit/color channels, surely we've got to ask the question of whether Lr will continue to deliver only 8bit output or if it will be able to do 10bit/channel with HDCP 2.2 connecting displays over HDMI 2.0?

You talking about the main LR UI or slideshow?

Either way, at this point the Mac OS does not support a high bit depth display pipeline and I think it's unlikely LR will get high bit for Windows only (even though Photoshop did it for Win only).

The main UI or to be more specific the "Develop" module (if "Develop" isn't high bit depth density then there's no point in anything else being that way.)

If Photoshop is (on Windows) does that mean ACR is also?

If you look at the wikipedia page for Rec 2020, there are a bunch of milestone dates from September 2014 onwards that are of interest and it will be interesting to see if Apple persist with 8bit displays or move to supporting 10/12 bit displays so that their products remain useful for critical work in 4k video.

Not sure, but I doubt it. Photoshop had to have code added to support a high bit depth display pipeline. So the main is can be (depending on the card and setup) but I doubt that extends to plug-ins.

If you are an Apple user this discussion (with Andrew Rodney contributing towards the end) is interesting as to the whys and why nots of 1o bit rendering. Skip to page three for the deepest of Andrew's comments. https://forums.adobe.com/thread/736938?tstart=0

Even though LR is not 10 bit it does a pretty good job of dithering to prevent banding in subtle transitions like skies.
