Using LR to print multiple images with margins on roll paper
« on: November 03, 2014, 05:45:38 pm »

I want to print multiple “prints” on 24” roll paper. For each print, I want to be able to specify a print size and margins, and then adjust the cell size within the margins, just like one does for a single image.

For example, I’d like to print two 12”x16” prints side by side, oriented vertically.  Each print will have a 5/8” margin on three sides and a 1” margin on the right side (which is the bottom of the print).

If I use the “Single Image/Contact Sheet” option and create two columns, the margins option does not allow me to specify margins within each column, only on the edges of the roll itself.

If I switch to either “Printer Package” or “Custom Package” I can no longer specify margins, only photo borders, which I cannot make wide enough as they are limited to 36 pt (1/2”).

If I make a custom template, then I have to carefully measure every image and make a template for each because they’re all cropped differently.  I’d prefer to have LR just let me adjust cell size for max image size within the print margin area.

At this point I’d be happy to just be able to print multiple prints of the same image, all the same size.  Again, with 5/8” margins on all sides except the RH side, which is 1”.

Currently I'm feeding roll paper through the printer, cutting off a section, then trimming it into individual print sizes, and then manually feeding and printing one at a time.  There has to be a better way.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Paul

It sounds a bit complicated. Have you checked Martin Evening's Lightroom 5 book? He has a lot of material there on managing print presets which may address your requirements (but then again it may not - you'd need to check). Another approach you may wish to check is that offered by LaserSoft Imaging with their new PrinTao application. It offers a lot of scope for customization, but again, you'd need to look it over carefully to see whether it will do all you want.

Yes, I've been poring over Martin Evening's LR 5 book all afternoon and can't find a solution there.  I'll check out the LaserSoft software you mentioned.  Thanks.

No mention of Qimage Ultimate in the Index?
PCGPCG made me think you may not have a Mac and then Qimage Ultimate could work well. There are enough LR users where the external editor choice is set on Qimage Ultimate to speed up the image transfer.

Edit: and if it is a Mac you may consider Print-Tool and have that as your external editor choice in LR. Not with all the features of QU but even less expensive and it gives you the feature of correct profile target printing that LR no longer has on a Mac.

In single image/contact if you set the width/heigth smaller than available, you get a white space between the rows/columns.
You then still have to cut midway between to get the white margin per image. I tend to use PS to add the white border to taste, also because i often need a sizable margin. And then print via LR.
I looked into Qimage, however found the user-interface too frustrating to learn. I briefly played with MIrage version 2, but found it not adding value over LR/PS combo. P.S.: i use Windows 7, so cannot play with QTR print-tool.
