Samsung NX1
« on: November 03, 2014, 05:33:33 pm »

What do people think about the Samsung NX1?  The specs certainly look good.  AF points cover 90% of the frame, EVF, 4K video and ofc the 15fps shooting.  Sounds like a formidable package.

I could be tempted to swap my Panasonic's I use for video for the NX-1.  Interested in hearing what others think though.

I am a member of Samsung's image logger program and should be receiving the camera in the next week or so. I've used previous cameras from them and while the image quality is generally good (class competitive), and some of their lenses are superb (85mm 1.4 especially) there have always been a few "gotcha's". I'm looking specifically for improvements is the EVF especially. I'd like to see a much better tracking between the color and contrast in the EVF and the rear screen. I'd also like to see a much, much quicker switch between them when using the automatic eye detection. If Samsung get the EVF just right and everything else is just as good as their current model NX30 with the addition of a state of the art sensor, I think they'll have a good still photography product. I don't know enough about the video codec (H.265) to make any comments.

Is the NX1 worthy of further investigation? A simple test says yes, article over at lensrentals: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2014/12/one-single-samsung-nx-1-test

It seems to me like the Samsung glass is competitive and the extra resolution of the sensor helps. Canikon need to wake up to the mirrorless revolution and soon.

I think the jury is out on its abilities as a video camera.  The competition is the GH4 which has been a runaway success.
Assessment of its abilities as a photo camera may be faster.
In any case it's really cheap for what it does, when bundled with that zoom.
