Acadia in the rain?
« on: October 29, 2014, 05:38:24 pm »

We're going to Acadia for a long weekend.  Looks like rain or possibly snow Saturday and Sunday (I understand forecast accuracy is often low, but they've been showing 90% chance for a few days).

Any recommendations on where to photograph in the rain?

Thanks.

I like the sieur de monts area. I was there last year. Have a look at my website the portfolio is called Eastern Hardwoods.

Good luck with the trip!

My wife and I had intended to spend last week in Acadia for hiking and photography, but the forecasts were for an extended nor'easter that would clobber Maine from Tuesday through Friday, so we cancelled. We'll try again in May.

Acadia is gorgeous, so I hope you get some good rainy day tips.

On a rainy Saturday we did the Eagle Lake carriage road and the Jordan Pond shore path.

The beginning of Eagle Lake (going clockwise) was very photogenic.  The balance was a nice walk, but less photogenic.

By the afternoon, it was raining heavily with high winds. The weather was awful at the beginning of the Jordan Pond walk, but that quickly improved, as the boardwalk on the left side (from the parking lot) was nicely sheltered. The weather was at our backs for the return portion of the loop.  Highly recommended.

Sunday was very heavy winds and freezing rain or snow.  I tried going outside, then quickly changed my mind.

Acadia is beautiful. Definitely worth the journey.

May is supposed to be a great time, other than lots and lots of black flies.

I'm glad you could rescue part of a grim weekend. I heard that Bangor got 12 inches of snow and that the coast was "clobbered."

Do try again in May. With nice weather, some of the easier summits, even fairly low ones, are treeless with great views and fascinating rock formations.

Bar Harbor didn't get much accumulation, but the rain, sleet or snow plus very high winds made walking outside painful.

FWIW, participants on a travel forum are recommending against May. They write that you can get some nice, sunny, warm spring days, but it's usually rainy and chilly and black flies and mud are issues.  September after Labor Day seems more popular.

They also say Sunday's storm was very unusual.  If so, I'd go again in late October.  Downside is that it's after foliage season and many places are closed, but there were no crowds and I prefer a bit of a chill. It would be nice to see peak foliage, but that time is likely to be rather crowded.
