Contax G to Sony E-mount Adapter
« on: October 25, 2014, 11:21:04 pm »

A question.

Is there a Contax to Sony E-mount adapter that covers Full Frame 24 x 36 mm?

I had a look on B&H but at first sight they all seemed to cater for Sony NEX cameras.

Thanks, Joris.

There are at least 3: Novoflex, Fotodiox and Kiwi. The latter is in aluminum, the others in brass.

The Novoflex "NEX" adapter works fine with the FE (Sony A series) mount. You can use NEX lenses on A7x cameras too (with a crop applied).

Thanks guys!  It is kind of annoying that B&H but also the respective websites of these companies are not more specific.

The Techart (version III) adapter also seems to get some love.  It only appears to be available through eBay

I tried a different Kiwi adapter in a local store and thought the quality was very poor.
I have Voigtlander and Metabones adapters and find them very good. Sorry none of this is specific to Contax.

are you refering to contax G ? or N? or 645?

techart makes a contax G with AF (doesnt work with 16, 21 and 35-70mm tho)
there are many others that make one without AF

Kipon makes a contax N with aperture control but not AF
Fringer makes one that controls both AF and Aperture.

there are some manual focus Contax 645 adaptors. Fringer Contax N can control aperture via NAM-1 adapter.

hope this helps.  ;D

I've assumed we're talking about the Yashica/Contax 35mm-format mount.

Contax G.  I have a G1 lying around with the Carl Zeiss Planar 2/45 lens.

Well, if it is the Contax G you may enjoy my short review of three Contax G to NEX adapters:

Btw. All Contax G adapters work for both NEX and A7x models (ie. E- and FE-mount). Only the "speedboosters" are just meant for APS-C NEX (obviously)

it's worth noting that the techart mk3 does not support 35-70mm. (ebay sellers claim it does, but even the designer said he gave up on that lens). also 16mm will not fit either.

21mm suffers heavy colour shift on full frame e mount (A7, A7r A7s) due to extreme angle.

45/2 works beautifully on A7 series. and actually rival the amazing FE 55mm F1.8 (except for extreme corners)

hope this helps  :)

Thanks for the information!

It sounds like the adapters work really well with the 45mm and the 90mm, less so for the wide angles and the zoom.

Anybody any experience with the 28mm and the 35mm?  I would expect these to also give good results.

JV, I think you'll find results with the G lenses to be in line with those of other film-era rangefinder (or RF-like) systems: fine & dandy for ~40mm & up, not so fine for shorter focal lengths. The Gs use traditional optical designs, not much different from Zeiss' current M mount lenses, and the G cameras have an M-like short register too.

Thanks Dave.  I guess Sony better hurry up then with those wide-angle lenses...

I guess I am still a bit on the fence with regards to Sony.

I believe the potential is enormous provided they do succeed in delivering quality lenses and provided the next generation of A7 bodies improves on the current generation.

There was also this article today from the Sigma CEO which generated quite a lot of reactions:
http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sigma-says-e-mount-diamater-is-small-and-makes-it-difficult-to-deisgn-high-quality-full-frame-lenses/#disqus_thread

Not sure what to make of it...
