Dolomites September 2014
« on: October 09, 2014, 11:45:31 am »

I have just returned from leading a workshop in the Dolomites in Northern Italy and would like to share some pictures from this.

All pictures have direct links above the embedded picture in the post. Click the direct links for a larger photo.

The pictures are shot with a Canon 5D mkIII and a Nikon D810. The lenses used were the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II and the new Canon 16-35 f/4L IS. On the Nikon I used Nikon 14-24 f/2.8G, Sigma 24-105 f/4 OS and the Nikon 70-200 f/4 VR. The D810 was a pleasant change from the D800E. No lockup in live view and much better looking live and LCD. EFCS also helped image details.

Hi,

I agree with Eric, see you next year!

Thanks for sharing the D810 experience.

What is your take on the Sigma 24-105/4 after using it a while? It is on my shopping list, sort of…

Best regards
Erik

Thanks very much to Francois and Erik. And to Erik K: Compared to the Canon 5D III the D800E always felt a bit clunky and slow with some obvious issues. Mostly they have been resolved with the D810 and I quite like this camera. For choosing the midrange zoom Nikon does not have an equivalent of the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II lens unfortunately, so I chose the Sigma 24-105 f/4 OS ART series lens. There is one issue that is annoying and that is if you forget to switch off OS on a tripod. Instead of a slight blur you a real blur. The lens is generally really sharp but it has a softness in the left hand side. I checked another Sigma 24-105 lens on my Canon body and ti was symmetric in sharpness so it is my copy that nees adjustment and the dealer has agreed there is an issue so I will leave it in for repair later. So if this is solved I'm sure I can give it my recommendation. It is a nice zoom range also for a walk around camera. The OS works well handheld. Although these days one can be ridiculed for walking around with a DSLR and a lens like that  ;) ;D And finally thanks for coming next year too.

Stunning photos, Hans.

If you promise - promise - me that I'll get some shots like those, irrespective of my lack of talent, I'll sign up in a heartbeat.  :D

Inspiring, as always. Dunno if I'll ever get to one of your trips, but you did motivate me to start using 70-200 mm focal lengths: thanks!

Good to hear Scott. Many think that landscapes should be shot with wide angle lenses only. I also see workshop participants coming without a 70-200 and they really miss out on a lot of shots.

I have been soaking up the info on this site now for some months now, but your pics of the Dolomites just compelled me to post my first comment. I'm a cyclist and these pics from the Dolomites are absolutely stunning. Thanks so much for sharing.

Thanks very much. Then you should try the Dolomites for photography :) I see many cyklists in the Dolomites and I always feel sorry for them going up and down these switchbacks :)
