Reducing photo file size
« on: October 08, 2014, 03:35:04 pm »

I have some photos I'd like to upload for the User Critique part of the forum.  But the limit on file size is 4MB, and these are 7.3, 5.5, 5.7, 4.4.  Is there a way to reduce file size without compromising the photo too much?  Thanks.

The details depend on your software, but in Lightroom I export photos for the forums with the long edge at 1200 pixels and jpeg quality at 93% and it works well. The quality is fine for on-screen viewing.

You really wouldn't want to upload the original sizes, and not even reduced to the 4Mb-limit. It takes longer to load and display, some people have problems seeing huge images on their devices, etc. Also, displaying full size files makes it more attractive for stealing (i.e., downloading and printing). For most practical purposes, a 75% jpeg, around 800-1200 pixels at the longer side, is quite sufficient.
