Vancouver area first week in march?
« on: October 03, 2014, 07:25:28 am »

We are planning a trip to Whistler first but then I have maybe 5 full days going alone. I'm planning to bring a DSLR with 14-24 and 70-200 (action) and a 50 mm at least. I thought I might do some sightsweeing/shooting in the area. Any suggestions, scenic locations or so that might work in winter?

I like landscape, night photography and such.

There is a spot on the road up to Cypress Bowl where you can get a spectacular view of downtown Vancouver.  You will be looking south-east and with a bit of luck you can catch a sunrise with the city enshrouded in fog.  The night scenes are also good.  Good luck - the weather will be dicey this time of year - lots of rain.

Good choice, just be aware that that spot has you shooting into the sun if you get there at other times of day. The city will be low contrast. Follow Rory's time advise to use it.

Also try Burrard street bridge (yes it has a good sidewalk for walkers) both sides, false creek science world, the top of the old sears tower - harbor place/ SFU downtown now, the convention center, the beach looking to the city at Jericho and at Kitsilano, Granville Island, White Rock pier, the top of the Chief in Squamish.

Thats great, thanks for the suggestions. The weather might be a problem but thats why we go, falls as snow in Whistler I hope :)

Any more suggestions are welcome. Doesn't have to be very close to the city, I could make daytrips any direction basically.

Try this:

BTW, March in Whistler will likely have some snow, but March in Vancouver is not winter. Flowers come out in February. Between Squamish and Whistler there's not a lot to see, but the sea to sky hwy south from Squamish has some beautiful views.

Thank you, very helpful.

I have to get my head around just how far south Vancouver is :) If i follow my latitude around the globe I end up somewhere in Yukon.

It has been years since I've been to Victoria, but I loved it there.

We're rather fond of it ourselves! After all, we get to live on a Pacific island paradise! And Vancouver is 1 1/2 hours by ferry, or 1/2 hour by float plane.

Glenn Bartley, who posts on this forum (bird photos mostly), is from Victoria, I believe.

As you begin your drive out of Vancouver I suggest you park your car and take a 30-minute ferry ride across Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island.  Get off and walk around for an hour then take the ferry back to your car.  The harbor and surrounding hills are very scenic and there are great views from the ferry.

Excellent, thank you for all the suggestions. I will look into it more in the coming days. Taking a ferry to Bowen Island and/or Victoria seems like a good idea. I just might do that.

As it turns out that road up to Cypress Bowl is closed 11pm-07am. Doh.
