Mountain Shepherd + Kid from the hills
« on: October 02, 2014, 03:32:38 pm »

Hi all,

Posting here for the first time.

Thanks for viewing. Comments and critiques most welcome.

Shepherds in highlands walk for days to cross from one place to another. Walks hundreds of kilometres in such an expedition. A mountain shepherd typically has his flock of sheep along with a couple of faithful canines. Mules are used for his transportation and luggage. This one for the last two days has been traversing through the uninhabited area up in the Himalayas. Somewhere in Uttarakhand,India near Rupin pass.

Shot with Olympus OMD EM-5 and 12-50mm.

Regards

It is indeed a nice shot. That part of the Himalayas is on a more human scale than the highest peaks, and I'd love to see some more of it

It's a fine shot. How about filling out your profile so we know where you are, etc.

How did I post after Russ, yet apparently post before him? Where's Dr Who to explain?

I screwed up, Bill. I didn't read to the end of the text, so I didn't know where this shot was made. I asked the OP where it was. Too embarrassing to leave the post up.

Very nice image! I feel like I'm on the spot, taking part of the daily trip… You managed to get a lot of interesting elements in the frame.

It's silly, but I am curious to see his shoes/boots. He has a very elegant and athletic walk.

Guys,  thankful for all your comments. Much appreciated for those comments for a newbie here. :)

Well, the link provided above doesn't portray me, its just a i-wannabe-doing-this-and-that sort of blog, which, of course, never took off.
Nevertheless I'm trying to hit off with simple photo-blog, sort of travel photography( whatever that means). :)

@Chairman Bill,
Thanks for the encouragement. It is true Bill,  that part of the Himalayas was more inhabited and includes normal trekking routes. If you carry your rations for about three days + emergencies you can comfortably scale some heights of about 5000-6000 feet. Will write more about my trekking experience when I start my mentioned blog! ( :P). I have a couple or more shots from the trip -which was done exactly one year before - and will be uploading here once I do with the processing. ( Somehow, I misplaced my memory cards for the 6 day trip and eventually had to do with a couple of 8GB cards!. Shot everything in fine JPEG. Well, can't get rid of the thought of missing raw files.)

@francois
Thanks for the nice words. On details, I realised that the shadow of a head with cap on is not his, but my companions!

@ muntanela
Yes, he was well built.. (as is the case with typical mountain men and women). Let me look for another picture where his shoes are visible.

I am attaching another version here. :)

I have posted a series of image from the trip in the blog.
Thank you all.

The shoes of the second photograph seem to have a good grip... (even a lateral one)

P.S. The snow in  the photo 11 of the blog doesn't seem to be a glacier, but a snowfield made by accumulated winter snow (probably of avalanches)

Something like this

Thanks for checking the blog and the correction. It was our local guide who told us that its a glacier. It was only a couple of hundred metres long. It looked very similar to your second photo. ( Which is a very good shot btw.. Where was it shot? Look similar to our route. :) )

It's a spring  shot (June 16 2010 ) in West Grosina Valley, (Valtelline, Northern Italy),  few meters over 2000m. Obviously in summer the snow disappears, but at higher altitudes, (not very high, even well under 3000 m) when the winter has been very snowy, there are snowfields like that of your photo even in summer.

P.S. But if the guide said it's a glacier, a glacier must  be...  ;)
