keep it simple
« on: September 25, 2014, 06:30:26 pm »

I have always been frustrated by people who bash on with the admonishment to "keep it simple".

My come back is that Nuclear power stations are not simple and neither is life -

so here is my landscape to bash on my point of view that life is not SIMPLE.

Beyond simple, your photo is a thumbnail.  I would like to see it larger.

Not that simple.

Certainly all life contains a great deal of complexity and creating a functional nuclear power station is one example of complexity. However, such complexity always exists within simple forms or within a simple framework.

If that nuclear power plant at Fukushima had been built at a greater height above sea level, and above the height of previously known flood levels which had resulted from previous tsunamis, then the continuing complexity of radioactive pollution would not be a problem.

The decision to build the nuclear plant close to sea level was basically very simple. It was cheaper.

I like the attached image because of its simplicity. The form is simple. However, in some respects I'm disappointed by a certain lack of complexity in the texture and the resolution, apparent in the 100% crop.  ;)

I am not saying the apparent appearance of simplicity is not appreciated by most people, I am saying the apparent simplicity is in the viewer's mind. Each feather in your bird's body is a marvel, the composition of the atmosphere is complex not simple - we think we are seeing simplicity - we are not seeing simplicity - well rarely anyway.

It's still not big enough to see anything.

Well the Flickr thing did not work, so above is a dropbox link - maybe that will work.

You will still need to download the file to your computer if you want to see the full resolution file.

The average human brain has about 86 billion neurons interconnected via trillions of synapses. The processes of viewing even simple structures is very complicated. The process of viewing complicated structures is proportionally more complicated.

Yes, this image confuses me.  My brain never settles on a conclusion.  I don't like it because of that.

It is simple, really. There is even a term for that: simplexity. And a book.

But in all seriousness, it would be a pretty decent landscape photo in its own right, without that inscription.

My come back is that Nuclear power stations are not simple and neither is life -

Actually, Mal, a nuke is infinitely simpler than a power station using coal or natural gas, though handling the fissile material is difficult.

And as far as life is concerned, it all depends on how complicated you want to make it.

And I can't determine whether your photograph is simple or complicated in its thumbnail form.

Well it has been a pleasure to read you thoughts on a matter which haunts me on a regular basis.

I see this life we have the honour of experiencing as a thing of marvel. So the brain experience of it is a very important part of the experience.

Thank you for the conversation.
