Surface Pro 3 and Lightroom anyone?
« on: September 13, 2014, 07:19:44 am »

Has anyone tried LR on the new Surface Pro 3? I've been thinking about a MacBook Air for travel, and I've used LR without real problems on my wife's MBA 13". But I'd much rather have a Windows machine than iOS (I don't want to start the usual fight - it's just that I am used to the Windows ecosystem).

If you've tried it, please say which model of the Surface Pro 3 you used (or the Surface Pro 2, if you think that works)?

Hi Paul,

I have my Surface Pro 3 since two weeks now, it is an amazing piece of hardware.
Lightroom works absolutely perfect, but thats is to be expected since it is a standard Windows 8 operating system.
What amazes me is the fact that you can actually judge your sharpening on the monitor and predict how it will look on print, thanks to the hight resolution.
I have not yet profiled the monitor, but colors seem to look ok so far, no problems with the gamut. I don't know if I will do color critical work on the SP3.
Overall operating speed is great, but this may be dependent on the configuration you buy (I went for the i7, 8 GB ram, 512 GB HD, the most expensive...).
Editing with your fingers on the screen is absolutely possible, you can also use the pen.
Presenting your work as a slideshow looks gorgeous.
So far, I'm very happy with the SP3 and would recommend it to everyone looking for such a device.

Greetings from Switzerland
Ludwig

Thanks, Ludwig, that's good to hear. I looked at one in store yesterday and I agree it's I nice machine.

Have you seen any sign of it getting hot while doing a lot of processing e.g. a series of raw conversions? Heating seems to be one of the few concerns that reviewers have highlighted.

a standard Windows 8 operating system.......  i7, 8 GB ram, 512 GB HD,
With that sort of spec it's no surprise it runs LR sweetly. More interesting is how the cheaper versions with lower spec perform.
Heating seems to be one of the few concerns that reviewers have highlighted.
The absolute deal killer for me is the inability to repair them.
http://gizmodo.com/microsoft-surface-pro-3-teardown-if-this-thing-breaks-1594704428 "If this thing breaks, you're screwed"
So when the battery fails, it's likely to be scrap. With only one USB socket that might take a lot of use, failure of that might make the machine unusable too.

Drifting away from the MSP, can you get LR to usefully* run on the much cheaper W8 tablets that are starting to appear with Intel Celeron CPU & 2gb ram eg http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/tabletpcs/tabletpcs/nnb-b25f.html

*checking shots in the field and starting to keyword etc.. I appreciate that a Celeron won't do the heavy lifting for much in the way of image processing.

Overheating has not been a problem for me till now. The fan will kick in from time to time, but that does not disturb me at all. I had it running for several hours, it gets hot for sure, but again, it has not melted yet.
Regarding the repairing problems, I am not competent to comment this. I have two left hands when it comes to take things apart, left alone reassambling them...

iFixit do have that expertise. If they can't take it apart without trashing it, the chances are that no one else can. That spells doom when the battery or USB socket fails and can't be replaced.

Thanks, guys, that's helpful. I shall probably invest in one in due course.
I'm relaxed about repairability. I accept the risk of back to the factory (or a genuine specialist) repairs for my phone, iPad, camera and lenses, though I'll fix my own desktop and coffee machine.

There's no iPad repairs on there either unsurprisingly as they are similar their sealed nature.
