Smoke Break

A bit of ocean breeze, hot out on the pavement but this was her one place of coolness and solitude.

Very nice, Chris. Love the selective focus and the composition. Bravo!

Thanks, Russ. There were several shots available but when she took the first drag off her ciggie, I knew I had to wait for the next pose. Great light for this shot.

Excellent. The hand, the fingernails, the cigarette are just perfect.

There are halos around the darker elements, otherwise very good.

It's jpeg compression. Look around her hair as there is none there...some of it is also the hard edges of the wooden swing.

No use, Chris. The nits are always going to get picked no matter what you do. I'm surprised nobody has suggested a cropping.

I thought it's cropped already

1170/900=1.3, do you of a sensor that gives you this ratio?  :P

Yes, it's obviously already cropped unless Chris shot it with a Rollei, Armand, but somebody usually comes up with a further crop.

Or, "I really wish she was holding the cigarette in her left hand," or, "I can't see her feet and therefore can't tell if she's sitting." What! You can't see the bench is held up by chains and the seat is lower on the left than the right and, really, are her feet really that important? You either like an image for the initial impact or you move on to the next one. I'm always game for a good suggestion that might include a crop, but never to "I wishes." Wish for the moon and perhaps you'll get a cigar for your efforts.

It's maddening sometimes the silly crap people come up with. I am bad about not cropping to specific crop ratios. So be it. I pay a little extra when getting work printed. I crop to whatever feels right to my eye.

There's a lot that works really well here. B&W choice, composition, technical stuff.
I keep seeing new little stuff to like... how the 'earring' echoes the chain for instance.
I love it.
