Lightroom and Aspect Ratio?

Aperture has a "private" metadata field that calculates the aspect ratio (such as 4x6 or 8x10) of a version (Lightroom = Virtual Copy). Lightroom has a metadata field called aspect ratio too, but it is binary; either landscape or portrait.

In Aperture I used the aspect ratio as a display choice and a filter to find my common photo sizes (such as 4x6, 8x10 or 11x14). Moving over to Lightroom I've tried both a custom color label (named 4x6, 8x10 and so on) as well as using the copy name field to manually fill in the photo size. I think I like the color label the best, but it's not perfect.

How to other Lightroom users handle this?

When I have something specific to a virtual copy (aspect ratio, printing paper, etc) I add that to the "Copy Name" field. When "EXIF and IPTC" is selected for the Metadata Palette in the Library module, Copy Name is third field from the top.

I don't know if that's the best way, so perhaps we'll here from others.

To clarify:  When using the Copy Field or other similar field to identify virtual copies, you can then use filters and/or smart collections to help find images with specific tag values.  This would help you find, for example, all of your 4x5 images.  But you would need to tag such images on your own.

Jeffreys Data Explorer plugin has the option to search on Aspect ratio of the original, cropped image etc. Very useful I have found.
