new 70-300 IS
« on: October 03, 2005, 10:20:46 pm »

Anybody have a copy of this lens yet and any opinions? Don't think it is available in the States just yet, but have heard it is in Europe.  Have been looking for a decent 70-300 (in black finish) and didn't know if I wanted to drop the bucks on the 70-300 DO IS (which I really like, however, for its size and handling).

Michael, if you're dropping in, have you had a chance to look at this lens yet?

Thanks!
Mark

I am a) very fussy, and b) very happy with this lens. Samples and a review on a 1Ds II will be posted over the weekend here . . . Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS test.

It seems too good to be true.
If the 70-300mm f4-5.6IS is really as good as suggested in that review,
then why choose the more expensive 70-300mm DO?

Very good question.
The truth is that this lens is a DO killer, at least as far as I can see it.

I'm told that it's even better than the [a href=\"http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_100400_4556_is/]Canon 100-400 IS L 4.5/5.6[/url] which I've just purchased and am very happy with.

I'm thinking about replacing my 100-400L with this lens as I just bought a 300 mm f/4 prime (non IS) which I can use with a tc 1.4 for the long end. The new generation IS, the low weight make this new lens a far more versastile lens I think.
Hereis one more test that adds to the rumour... " a hidden L lens" it says.

Having just bought one I loved this line from the review linked above:

"Compared to true L grade lenses the contrast level seems to be a tad lower at 300mm. Nonetheless this is truly baffling for such an affordable lens."

I haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet but I took quite a few hand held shots of my Beta (fish) in poor light for lens speed and was quite surprised with the results.. Very nice for the little experiance I have with it so far.
