First time I shot a job with 5d III and magic lantern raw
« on: July 30, 2014, 01:27:49 pm »

Hey everyone,

I shot my last video job, a fashion-travel thing in sweden ( ) using the 5d III w ML raw and I have to say, this hack really works great and the results are so much nicer than anything I was able to get from this camera before. I used the fast sanDisk cards, after six days of shooting I ended up with about 1 TB of raw files. Edited in prores LT and graded from the original cinema dngs in resolve.

If you ever hesitated to try magic lantern, give it a try, I did not regret it.

cheers,
martin

Fantastic job both in cinematography and editing. I shot with a Panasonic P2 camera at work but I recently got a dslr and I have been wondering about Magic Lantern. What specifically did it help you with in your shooting? Peaking for video, audio meters ? Do you use Rsolve lite or the full version?

Thanks!

Thanks everybody!

ML helped with the ability to shoot raw video. The sharpness, detail and dynamic range plus the ability to change white balance and all that makes video out of the 5d so much better.
I have a full version of resolve but the lite version works just a good for fullHD.

Superb job, I have a house up in Lapland and live here most of the year, you managed to show the place really well, I enjoyed watching the video.

Gorgeous work, well shot and scripted, great editing.

Out of curiosity, what did you use to stabilize the camera while shooting? It looks all hand-held.

Please let me know, and thanks again for sharing your work. Cheers

Yea very nice editing and fluid movement through time.

And, how DID you stabilize it? I can't tell what was shot with a tripod and what wasn't.

Sorry for the late reply guys.
Everything was shot off the shoulder, no tripods. For the stuff from the helicopter I used a small Kenyon gyro.

thanks again,

Off the shoulder with what kind of mount or stabilizer?

Nothing fancy, shoulder pad and some grips. See one of our local crew in Mongolia with my rig on his shoulder in the attached pic.

cheers!

As a still photographer who doesn't know anything about video (and doesn't want to know), all I can say is that this one is mesmerizingly beautiful and well done.

Looks like the Red Rock shoulder mount.

All I can say is just works. Your footage is excellent. Thank you.

It actually is a Vocas shoulder mount with rods, Redrock grips and the Redrock/RRS Baseplate and a Vocas arm thing for the EVF  :)

Great video! Was your experience with ML absolutely flawless? Like did you have any cases where you had to reboot camera, re-insert cards, any lost frames?

I'm well experienced in ML on my 50D, but the experience is slightly heartbreaking )))

Thanks!

No, ML is not perfect. I have to reboot from time to time or remove the battery to do so, but without ML I also have to do that, as for example occasionally the evf won't connect or something else happens.
But as soon as the camera booted fine and ML is running, and that is really mostly the case, everything works fine, no dropped frames, no glitches.
I just shot another video for the same brand, and again on the 5d3 with ML, everything worked fine again.

cheers!
