flatten layers for printer ?
« on: July 24, 2014, 02:49:30 pm »

Hello All.
Is it preferable to flatten the soft-proofed file before sending it onto the printer? Have PS manage the print.
Running PS 2014 on Mavericks. Printing on an Epson r2880.
Thanks.

Matters not at all. Printers don't do "layers" and PS will, in essence, flatten the image before sending to the printer.

Hi Richard,

There is of course one reason you need to flatten before printing.  If you need to rotate the image to fit most economically on roll stock and if you have any layer effects, you will find that some effects will not take kindly to image rotation.  As an example, if you have added a drop shadow to a layer and then rotate 180ยบ without flattening first, you will notice that the shadow will not rotate and will actually be on the opposite side of the type, object etc.  If it was a downward shadow it will become and upward shadow in that case.  Some other effects are also prone to problems due to image rotation.  Of course these issues would manifest no matter the reason for rotation, but you can very quickly ruin a print by forgetting to flatten an image containing layer effects.  Also, sometimes if you have added a notation to the image and then rotate before flattening the note may end up outside the image window if or when you undo the rotation.  This has nothing to do with printing, but worth knowing I believe.

Exactly. And that brings up the idea that using layers is non destructive (only partially in terms of the editing part of this process). Flatten, don't flatten, the same data goes to the printer and the edits are applied and there's the data loss. Which isn't anything to worry about using high bit data.
