A Blast from the Past
« on: July 23, 2014, 02:11:33 pm »

Going through negatives preparatory to moving to Florida for good. Found this one that I overlooked when I scanned my select negatives. I hope it displays properly here. I can't bring it up myself.

Bravo, Russ, that's a great image. All human male life is there - not to mention the female side of things -  in a nutshell. The empty chairs tell their own story of what may or may not happen to this poor guy later on. In the meantime, he's between a rock and a hard place which is his future, no matter how he plays it.

By the way, are you back on the air!

Thanks, Seamus. I forgot to mention that I shot this picture in 1968. I guess if you're old enough you can tell that from the way the guy's dressed and from the big hair on the gal at the camera right end of the bench.

Yeah, I was born in 1946 - we were all influenced by 'Americana'. This image has the look of that era - some guy maybe in a bus station heading off to imagined stardom in LA and not knowing what lies ahead of him, not knowing that his fate is not in his own hands - like every other guy that ever was born!

Right. And look at us now: all wildly successful photographers, writers, and philosophers. Maybe that kid's one of us for all we know.

Timeless shot, as is all good street shots. The same shot today would see the two girls on the left on their cell phones minus the cigarette and magazine, the guy in the middle searching on-line jobs with his laptop, and the two women on the right reading the latest Cosmo sex tips. Amazing what you can read into a superior street shot. Great job. And digitize the negative for the next generation.

Good shot that is for sure.

And time has only added to the quality of the wine.

By the way, are you back on the air!

Missed that part, Seamus. No, only occasionally. Sometimes I can download a complete photograph. Other times I get a notice that the picture is corrupt and that Firefox can't display it. Other times I get a popup that asks if I want to load the picture into DreamWeaver. Chrome always just downloads the index.php part of the link string and leaves things that way. I'm beginning to suspect that the problem's the last series of Windows 7 updates. I keep hoping Microsoft will realize their mistake and correct it.

Hi Rajan, In my file copy, which I can blow up large enough to read, the bag says, "Scandinavian Center." Might have been a shop in the airport. In those days you still could carry stuff onto the airplane without having to take off your shoes and bend over.

And thanks all for the kind comments. I ran across at least one more print as I was moving stuff out of the closets in my studio that I'd like to find the negative for and post. So far I haven't found it in my contact sheets, but I'll keep looking.

Does anyone really move to Florida for good? I'm told that there's more good elsewhere. :)

Great shot though

I wouldn't have anything to do with south Florida, but the area around Jacksonville is fine, and I want to spend a lot of time in St. Augustine, which always is a visual feast and a street photographer's dream.

So you are not moving to your former roost around Lake Mary?

Nope, we're gonna head north. At least a bit north. I really want to be within easy striking distance of St. Aug, Chris. And having the amenities of Jacksonville nearby won't hurt either.

Good, you'll be easier to visit.
