5D Support Essentials
« on: September 27, 2005, 09:39:48 pm »

Before the forum crash, I started a thread that asked for rumors/info regarding staple items one would expect to use in support of the new 5D. I still don't know where I stand with this purchase, but not having ACR support or a RRS L Plate are probably taking me out of the class of early adopters.

I am not only interested in when the goodie side-dishes are coming, but I am also interested in what people are doing in the meantime. Michael, you took the 5D to Greece. Did you use the Canon software to process RAW files?

Here's my challenge to anyone willing to help. Tell us if you know the status/availability of any of the following, or tell us of your work-around:

1) ACR support for 5D (the new 3.2 does not support the 5D)
2) C1 support for the 5D
3) RRS L Plates for the 5D
4) Archive Creator support for the 5D
5) Downloader support for the 5D
6) You name it - what are you looking for?

Thanks in advance!

Bob,

That's the problem with being an early adopter. Sometimes the support side is lacking for some months.

I used a Beta of the next version of Camera Raw for my raw conversions.

As for the other items, I have no inside info right now on any of them. But, it'll be a while.

Reviewers and third party software and hardware makers only got their hands on 5Ds about three weeks ago. Canon is cutting the time between announcement, samples and shipping to just a month or so, which makes it tough all around.

The new ACR apparently supports the 5D unofficially. On another forum, a guy said that he was busy coverting all his 5D files from the past month with the new ACR.

I called RRS a while back about an 'L' plate, they said that they should have one in production about a month after the camera is available and they are taking orders already.

I would be interested in when and if Rawshooter Essentials will support the 5D, the Rawshooter slideshow is an essential part of my workflow, or whether it will only be incorporated in the next and non free version.

Well, the ACR support and the RRS L-plate take care of two of my three needs. Now if one of you folks wants to give me $3000, I'll put in my order right away

Well, I'm in the game. I ordered the 5D body. I'll be calling RRS to get on the waiting list.

Just phoned up and made an order for the L bracket (w/grip). It's nearly midnight here but it's not there in the US which although annoying usually, can be useful at times!

First post.  Great site and great forum.

I happened to be at Vistek Wednesday to buy a remote when they got their 5Ds and 24-105 f/4Ls.  I demoed the set in the store.  I had the latest ACR update (v3.2, which finally fixes the dates on my raw files!) on my notebook and it read the 5D raw files (as well as those from the 1DmkIIn) just fine.  Man, you guys will love your new 5Ds.

Enjoy,
Dave

Since I don't have a L-bracket for the 5D yet, I'm currently using my 1-series L-bracket on it.  Greasy, not ideal ... but hey, it works.

RRS informed me that my 5D L-bracket order will be shipped around 11/1.

They are great folks to deal with.

BTW - they are taking phone orders now for their new BH-40 mid-sized ball head. About $325 with lever clamp. Shipment start in 2 weeks. Sounds like a nice match for a 12-series Gitzo rig.

Hi Bob, how much does the 5D's L-bracket sell for?  Thanks.

Raw Shooter|Premium 2005 (whenever it's going to be released) will support both the new 1D2N and 5D.  I figure ACR will be the first to officially support the 5D, and C1 will be the last to support it.

Good morning guys,

just a question - what´s a L-bracket?

I´m from Europe so I am not that familiar with photo spec terms.

thanks!

OK - I just opened the box and set up the camera. First observations:

1) The controls are a no-brainer for anyone used to a 20D. Virtually identical.

2) The shutter/mirror action is noticably quieter. Not as sharp sounding, but not a pleasing "kachunk" either. Just different and less noticable.

3) Big viewfinder  - finally. But no brighter.

4) Much larger LCD, but probably just as hard to use in sunlight.

5) Same fit and finish as the 20D.

Hopefully, I will give this thing a run though on Friday.
