Ideas for South Dakota and surrounding areas ghost towns?
« on: July 15, 2014, 04:21:23 pm »

Hi All,

We're headed for SD on July 30th to check out semi-ghost and ghost towns. It seems like most of the gems are located in the western part of the state, particularly the Black Hills area. But if anyone is aware of interesting locations in the eastern area, that's good too. We're also into old factories, re-purposed buildings with evidence of their former use, old gas stations and restaurants, etc.).

We'll be traveling from the Keweenah, MI peninsula through southern Wisconsin and Minnesota to SD, mostly off the major highways. There are probably some interesting sites along the way, but I haven't had much luck discovering any; Ghosttowns.com has been of minimal help in that regard. We may travel into eastern Wyoming, if anyone has any suggestions.

There seem to be a few interesting towns on the way to our final destination: Boulder, CO (middle of August).

Thanks for any thoughts you may have!

Merrill -- Speaking from a little further north, ghost towns are not common on the Great Plains. On the other hand, there are lots of individual buildings, barns, elevators and machines that should keep you busy. Have fun!
