Problems profiling HM photorag baryta on Z3200
« on: July 01, 2014, 07:03:12 pm »

this is the first time im having an unsolvable problem when profiling a paper. been duing this for years with different programs/rips..

i set up a custom setting for the hahnemühle photorag baryta.. printed patches (4096 atkins.. then tried another 918 patchset) and used i1 profiler.. and aps.. different settings. i ALWAYS get banding going from green to magenta.. visually! so i cant use the print.

havent tried a RIP.. not worth the paper waste for me in this case.

i was able to get a working profile 1st try for the canon pixma pro1.. like usual..

does anybody have an idea what the Z is doing? looks like the transision from gray into color is not smooth enough.. but why? ernst ;-) ?

Could be your light gray print head is bad. You often need composite gray to make smooth transitions.

Did you try to make a black and white print to see if you notice any gradient issues?

RGB-device printer profiling?  Hahnemühle Z3200 media preset ? The calibration file did not show any banding like in the light grey patches John mentions?

RGB profiling.. Qimage..

i did a new test. i used a pearl paper that i have an RGB profile and numerous RIP profiles.

the result is attached.. the picture is ok.. not so important.. here is the result:

thanx for the BW idea..

the top left is the photorag baryta profile again.. same problems - profiled RGB i1 profiler.. 0 0 0 settings.. printed with qimage (tried hp explorer, same result)
underneath is the same where in the driver i chose print as BW.. no banding at all!!

underneath another profile for the hp semi gloss inst. dry.. same probs..

upper right.. the pearl paper profile RGB.. same prob

mid right.. pearl profile thru onyx.. strong GCR.. almost no banding..
lower right.. pearl profile thru onyx strong UCR.. no banding but a little week..

so obviously this is a transition that the printer driver is not able to print.. ? but BW!!

Can't tell what the problem is from that. Print out the Hp head evaluation patterns and look at all the inks described for any abnormalities, especially the various gray patches. If anything is missing or banding there you can determine which head is bad, it could also be a magenta or green head, or the regular gray.

Anytime I've ever run across anything close to this it has always been a bad head.
