Saving space with lossy DNGs
« on: June 26, 2014, 07:00:00 pm »

If you need to save space, say for mobile devices this article by John Nack [ex product manager of PS and now PM for Google's photo stuff] may be of interest.

Let the pixel peeping commence and let's see if people find this option of merit.  :)

I did the same tests as Nack and was attracted to lossy DNG, until I discovered a "bug" documented in this thread:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=82064.msg699884#msg699884

...which shows that lens corrections are different between lossy and lossless DNG.

I had planned to convert my large library of "used" DNGs to lossy, but my originals were all made from lossless. That means that if I ever did reprocess an old DNG, it would not match the orginal.

Plus, if Adobe ever gets around to fixing the bug will the new ACR (version 10?) then process old lossy DNGs correctly? Will they match old originals or not?

While lossy DNG has its uses (it's what Adobe uses for Lightroom smart previews and for Lightroom mobile) I just wouldn't encourage people to use the format for other reasons or to save disc space. Get a bigger drive, or dump the pictures - after all, if they aren't worth keeping in their full glory, are they really worth keeping?
