Cartridge Error after replacing FFC
« on: June 17, 2014, 06:05:40 am »

Ok So i went ahead and replaced the head FFC on my epson 7900 all went well until upon turning back on I was faced with this no cartridges.

If I take one cartridge out all the others appear doesn't matter which cartridge I remove.

Anyone got any ideas ??

Helpful framah

I called Epson ages ago and they told me it would be £1200 for an engineer fixed price repair. So I have been struggling since. Everyone on this forum knows how helpful Epson are !!!

But thanks anyway for your input

I've had something similar happen to me. Try pulling one cartridge out, then close the ink bay doors with the cartridge still out and the printer on. It should show all the other cartridges ok. Now reinsert the cartridge, close the doors. You may have to do it once per side or in your case maybe once for each cartridge. It's been a while but I remember having had to do this a couple time to recover from cartridge errors.

This happened after replacing the printhead FFC but not the printhead? Ever so slightly skewed FFC connectors can also cause goofy errors. Make sure the connectors are squared and centered in their sockets.

Hi cybis

Thanks for your input on this. Yes sounds exactly the same, if I removed one cartridge all the other appear. I will try working down the line and remove each one in turn. Lets see if that works. (god i hope so).

Once again thank you so much for your knowledge on this one.

Crossing my fingers... Make sure you close the ink bay doors in between. Just to be sure we are on the same page, here is the sequence I would try:
  • printer on
  • ink bay doors open
  • eject cartridge 1
  • doors closed
  • observe cartridge status
  • doors open
  • reinsert cartridge 1
  • eject cartridge 2
  • etc

Come to think of it, I can't remember if this wasn't the sequence instead... Anyway you can give both methods a shot.
  • printer on
  • ink bay doors open
  • eject cartridge 1
  • doors closed
  • observe cartridge status
  • doors open
  • reinsert cartridge 1
  • doors close
  • observe cartridge status
  • doors open
  • eject cartridge 2
  • etc

Hi

I have tried the above and no joy so far come this weekend i am going to pull it to bits again and make sure the cables are all connected properly. Then try both above methods again.

Thanks for your help and any more input or ideas from anyone welcomed.

It seems to me that it is almost like a reset procedure as it can see every single cartridge all the way along until the last one goes in and all the crosses come up again.

Then it doesn't matter which cartridge is removed as long as one is out all the others show up.

Strange.........

Bummer. Can you describe the work done on the printer before the cartridge error occurred?

Yes sure. Was just photo rag and german etching mainly nothing special or anything that could harm the printer. Always used genuine ink

I have attached some pictures maybe it will explain it better.

As you can see the orange cart is out as soon as I put it back in they all disappear. (no matter which one is taken out).

Also its like a job is stuck on the machine and wont cancel.

Might just spark someone to think if something, I am trying everything !! Head ache......

I meant maintenance wise, what was done to the printer before the error occurred. You say 'after replacing FFC', what do you mean exactly?

Nothing at all was working fine

I keep the wiper cleaned off, run a nozzle check every other day even if i am not printing.

thats about it. It has not ever had any maintenance other than me cleaning things up.

Is there any way of wiping its memory and reinstalling anything or something like that ?

thanks

I'm a little confused now. In my mind FFC means Flat Flexible Connector. And when you say you 'replaced the head FFC', I thought you had performed a printhead replacement. So, not the case then?

No sorry the head has not been replaced. I had a problem before will try and find the link. My nozzle check was perfect and the head is good as far as i know. someone suggested on here it look like the FFC cable from the print head to the carriage board so thats the only bit that has been changed.

All i have done is disconnected the cable and replaced with a new one. Switch it back on and the cartridge error has been there ever since.

Thanks again
