HDMI or Displayport
« on: June 17, 2014, 01:57:04 am »

Hello all,

I have the new Mac Pro and I'm adding a 4k monitor to it. However, I'm not sure if I should use a displayport connection or HDMI.

I'm getting the Samsung 28" LED LCD 4K UHD Monitor...for those interested. It has two 1.4 HDMI connections, and one 1.2 displayport connection. The Mac Pro has one 1.4 HDMI and six Thunderbolt mini Displayport connections. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So would a standard Displayport to mini Displayport cable do the trick? Is there a special type of cable I should be looking at for 4k resolution? Or should I just grab the HDMI and call it a day? That would rob my one HDMI connection though.

I'm a bit confused on all of the cable protocols and was hoping someone could clarify and break it down for me.

Thank guys!

The right answer is usually displayport.

Andrew,

Is a display port a display port? Or does the whole 1.1, 1.2 come into play? I ask because I read that a display port cable is the same no matter the specs. Thanks!

Hi, I've found this Apple page to be helpful:

Or try this page:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5219#25

Can I connect to my 4K Ultra HD TV or 4K display via Thunderbolt?

4K Ultra HD TVs are supported over HDMI or with Thunderbolt to high-speed HDMI adapters. Specific 4K DisplayPort displays are supported on Thunderbolt with a mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.
