Cutting masks for Fujifilm GX680
« on: June 16, 2014, 07:10:03 pm »

Just posted this. If you have a Fujifilm GX680, this will be of interest to you.

Please let me know if that helps. I would like to know if I was useful to anyone.

(and if I am, please consider donating towards my tuition fees? I will put a page about that on the blog soon.)

That is a very good idea, but why limit it to the GX680? It would work with any camera.

It would indeed. The GX680 is simply what I have.

I have found that the presence of the metal frame around the ground glass holds the laminating film quite well without the need to use any adhesives that may ruin or affect your ground glass focusing screen. I do not know if other cameras have a similar metal frame that is forgiving enough to insert such a thing in it.

Please feel free to use it for whatever you need. If you think there is a mask format that is popular enough I will edit the PD file to suit people's needs.

ALPA has masks you can download and print on clear plastic for various sized backs/shifts:

Thanks for the link.

I see their method is to print on %100 transparency and cut the outer frame. Basically like drawing the frame except on a different layer. I did not think of that because 1) I did not have a %100 transparency film, and 2) I do not have a suitable printer. Not sure if a home inkjet can print on that.

My method is different in that in using the kind of laminating film that I used, which is similar to ground glass in texture, you actually blur out the outer frame and keep a clear section which is your frame. Personally, I prefer this a lot more than a mere printed frame. Even Fuji's own original bracket frames for 6x7 and 6x8 are somewhat difficult to see or pay attention to for me.

It will be a personal preference of course, but definitely thanks for sharing the link.

Also, if I did not miss anything, the link is for "ALPA GROUND GLASS STITCHING MASKS", which is not Fuji GX680 size/format/screen.

What I meant is that you may want to put the names of a few other MF cameras in your post so that people using them will also find your idea. The brilliant idea is to use the mate film for the mask.

I could update the PSD file to include every possible MF/LF focusing screen out there. Just give me the dimensions of the full screen, details of any mesh drawn on it, and the size of possible masks that you would need on it, and I will update the PSD with a layer for each so you can mix and match.

A Mamiya ZD with a 48x36mm chip actually arrived! I won't be using that on the Fuji GX680 but it seems like a good idea to include that size in the file.

Has anyone actually made use of this so far?
