About the USB dock
Have not tried it yet, but as you can see the bonus of the sigma USB-dock is that you can change the autofocus  at 4 distances
Also you can go to full time manual focus by turning the focus ring ( or not) and select how sensitive you like to have it.

Thanks for the info, Pieter.

The USB dock principle looks nice. To bad that (as you mentioned earlier) the focus throw is so short, and that the lens doesn't play nice with Helicon Remote.

Cheers,
Bart

The sigma and nikon at 5.6 look very close. Extreme corners look soft in both cases but that seems more the subject matter and distance. Does anyone have comparison of corners on a flat surface between these two. I've been looking into the nikon 1.8g for a 50. I tend not to shoot wider than 4 or 5.6 anyway, seems like $700 would almost be a waste seeing the nikon is now $196 on sale.

I agree, the Nikon is good value...
What you could not see is that the extreme corners never get sharp
For the sigma it is f8 ...
But it loses some microcontrast at that aperture..
Also the coating of the Sigma is much more flare resistant.

The new Sigma looks good, though it is expensive and hefty for a 50mm lens.
But not as pricey as the Sony Zeiss 50mm

The Sigma is not available for either Sony A or E mount cameras. Given Sigmas normal release pattern it is at least 12 months away if it is ever released. So why would anyone bother with Sigma ?

Some ignorant or misinformed people like me posses a Nikon D800, for which Sigma Art lenses are available. The rumor has it some have even Canon DSLRs!!!

Update;

I have calibrated the autofocus with the USB Dock.
It needed a +10 to +12 correction ( out of +20max) for my lens body combination leaving the Nikon autofocus correction at default.
Autofocus works almost perfect now- it is about as fast as i work and very precise - at f1,4   9 out of 10 of my snapshots are spot on. f1,4 is clear and very sharp in the center.
because " a picture says more than...."  i have put two NEF’s online
download at:

(I leave them for about one week)
