Red-Bellied Woodpecker

There were several on the same tree. Fun little guys to shoot but they're kind of like squirrels: flighty and skittish.

Two very nice images. In the end, I prefer the second one. The background is nicer and the woodpecker's posture is less static.

I love these. For the past couple of winters a red-bellied has been visiting my bird feeders, and it is a gorgeous bird. And recently we have seen evidence of two different red-bellied nest sites in two different nearby wooded areas, even though they are still supposed to be rare in Massachusetts.

They can look like exotic insects when they fluff out their feathers:
