Printing I must be missing something
« on: June 01, 2014, 09:16:03 am »

After years of printing from PS I have succumbed to the wisdom of others and am trying to print from lightroom 5 . In photoshop I size the image to the size I want to print eg 16x20 or 8,5x11 and select paper size then print.  How do you select the size that you want your print to be in lightroom? I have the lightroom 4 videos and have watched the printing section but just can't figure this out.

In lightroom you select a paper(size, printer, printer settings, paper profile). Then you place the image in the size you want regardless of the image size in pixels or pixels per inch. This is the short version.

On a Mac...
- under Page Setup, Select your paper size and Orientation
In the Print panel on the right...
- Layout Style - choose Single Image
- Layout - select the Margins for the print; they will determine a maximum Cell Size, which you can alter down from using the Cell Size adjustments;
- The image you see may not fill the dimensions of the cell determined by the margins. It is the image as cropped in the Develop module. If you wish to fill the cell (allowing the Print module to crop from the cropping you may have done in Develop), then go to Image Settings (above Layout) and select "Zoom to Fill"

Under Guides, I find it helpful to "Show Guides" and often have them all turned on, but that be confusing until you see what each one shows you.

As stated above, LR does the arithmetic for you with regards to pixels. Under Print Job, enter the print resolution best for your printer - Epson, 360ppi; all others (I believe) set to 300ppi.

Also, be sure to download the printer-paper profile (unless, of course, you create your own) so it can be selected under Colour Management.

Hope this helps get you started! I highly recommend Scott Kelby's book for Lightroom 5. It gives step-by-step instructions, with photos and screen captures at each step to help you. It sure beats trying to find just the right clip in the video series!

Okay: Now I know I'm missing something.
In ligthroom using windows, I selected print, then page setup (using 7900 as printer) selected enhanced matt paper size 81/2 x 11 source sheet orientation portrait, then on the right panel selected layout style single image under margins selected .25 for all cell size 10.19 x 8 hit print and I get a print 9x8 with no margin on the bottom 1 1/2" on the right  1/2" on the top and left margins and a picture that is approx 60% or less of the actual image. When you see the "print" on screen, does the image fill the 10.19 x 8 cell? It's WYSIWYG so it should look the same on screen as it does coming out of the printer. If it looks correct on screen and doesn't print correctly, then I'm out of ideas, unless there is a hiccup with the printer driver.

Attach a screen shot of the layout and of the palettes if possible.

When you select your sheet size different size sheets have different sized default borders.
81/2x11 sheet for example has a .56 trailing edge border and less on all the other sides.
The only way to get equal borders on an 81/2x11 sheet is to make all 4 sides .56
You then have to click "Zoom to Fill"as your image will not fit in the new size.

It appears the problem is corrected. I printed out a copy on my Epson xp 850 it came out the right size went back to the 7900 and checked in page layout reduce/enlarge and it printed out correctly.
Thanks for the advice
