New - Cambo Actus View Camera for Sony A7
« on: May 27, 2014, 12:05:26 pm »

This is a pre-release of a Cambo announcement of a new small format view camera system for mirrorless camera systems like the Sony A7.

This is a pretty exciting looking extension for these cameras.

https://captureintegration.com/cambo-actus-view-camera/

Similar to the Cambo X2 Pro, but the camera is the size of an iPhone, yet will have precisely geared movements made for such a small camera.

15cm x 10cm x 17cm, approximately 1000 grams. Pricing is expected to be in the $2,000 range.

*Note - there are a some elements not 100% finalized, but the final shipping version will be delivered relatively quickly, probably within 1-2 months for orders today.

Great idea for sure, will add a lot of depth to an already great camera.

On the outer mount it seems to only take Mamiya or Hasselblad  645 lenses?  Or the Leica M?  No ability to use Canon or Nikon?

You will be able to also use Schneider/Rodenstock lenses. I am told it can also accept Canon/Nikon bodies, but not sure what limitations there will be, other than the flange distance is affected, so expect the focal length to be restricted for mirror-full bodies the same as it is for the X2 Pro (70mm or longer, typically)

What is the minimum distant possible from the sensor the lens?

I would assume that this would only be limited by the depth of the sensor well in the Sony, right?

I may sound a bit boring, but just as with the MF-two+A7r and indeed the IQ250 this solution will concerning technical wide angles be limited by the Sony crosstalk-prone sensor, and not so much the flange distance. The MF-two/A7r fits the SK35 and can do at least 10mm shift with that, although with large crosstalk issues. For wides it's probably best with with MF-SLR lenses, and save the large format lenses for longer focal lengths.

As it's a matter of taste how much desaturation and color instability and eventually demosaicing artifacts you can accept (which is the effect of the crosstalk) it will not be possible to say which lenses are compatible and not. To not get any crosstalk at all with this sensor for reasonable shifts of symmetrical lenses you will need to get above 60mm. Some crosstalk is generally acceptable though, and even a large pixel back like my Aptus 75 have crosstalk with the SK35 so tech shooters have lived with it for quite some time, just not as huge levels as with the new CMOS sensors.

Hi Steve,

Now this looks very interesting to me as my new Horseman VCC unit has some major design flaws.

Can you please contact me directly when you have more info and pricing.

I would be using my Nikon’s and Rodenstock Apo Rodagon lens on this baby.

Cheers

From the image, it doesn't look like the front swings and tilts can be adjusted to be at the entrance pupil.  Do you have some other images that show this better?

Simon,
what are VCC flaws? I was keeping an eye on this camera for my D800e. I knew you had some problems when you bought it, but I thought you've solved them.
Thanks!

Do not have additional images yet, but will forward soon as we do.

I am told the tilt/swing are on axis and both are very close to the nodal point of the lens, though this will vary depending on the lens model and design.

Will you be doing lens tests for this? Be interested in how the enlarging and close focus rodagons (apo and non-apo) perform.
wondering if a 60mm rodagon will work with this cambo/A7r combo.

Pretty neat. Has there been any thought given to integrating the firing of a leaf-shutter lens with the a7R focal plane shutter? If the camera is really light-tight, letting the photographer sort it out might be cumbersome, but acceptable.

The Mamiya Z lens is on it in one photo. What makes the Mamiya compatible and how the output quality stack up with the A7R?

As Paul noted - manual control of the aperture. By output quality, do you mean an RZ lens on a Sony A7R? I've shot RZ lenses on 5.2 micron pixel sensors before (IQ180) and they are not quite a match for a modern optic - say like a Schneider 80LS - but not off by much at all. I've generally been impressed how well RZ lenses hold up.
