3880 for office printing
« on: May 09, 2014, 12:54:52 pm »

I'd love some advice on using my 3880 to print out the random office document.

My "office" printer recently kicked the bucket, and in the meantime I've been using my 3880 to print out the occassional document. Maybe 1-2 8.5x11 sheets per day.

I figured that on the bright side, this could help prevent nozzle clogging from not being in use.

The one thing that I notice/am concerned about is that the 3880 takes quite a bit of time to "warm up", and I wonder if ink is being discharged/lost during that process?

The actual amount of ink on the paper is very minimal... nothing that worries me in terms of cost. But I'm curious if I'm using more ink than I think during the power up/power down process.

I'd imagine the answer to this question would also apply to pretty much any Epson photo printer.

Thanks!

No need to turn if off if that is what you are doing.
Just leave it on.

I have seen laser printers for $29AU. I doubt if it is really cost effective to use a 3880.

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

It's more a question of really enjoying the extra space in my tiny office than saving just a few bucks on ink. I wanted to be sure that I wasn't expending more than just a few bucks considering all thats going on when the printer starts itself up.

I'll give the leave-it-on suggestion a shot. Thanks!

So it looks like the printer automatically turns itself off (I don't leave the USB cable plugged in so that might be part of why)... That means it's back to the lengthy start up routine everytime I print, and I'm still wondering if that's using up a ton of ink  ??? ??? ???

If anyone has any insight, I'd love to hear!

My 3800 is connected via Ethernet but it never goes to sleep mode.

You can turn off the automatic shut down and then the printer will just go into sleep mode.

I had a similar issue with a dead office printer a couple of years ago.  Got an Epson Workforce 840 All-In-One to replace it.  Very inexpensive and does a fabulous job - even does a decent job on the occasional photo print when I don't want to use my Big Gun 3880,  Highly recommended.
