I love the composition of the color version. But without the color it would be a much stronger image.

I think your second photo takes the same theme and makes it even stronger. Beautiful shapes and colours with fewer distractions. For example, the first image has out of focus bits along the top which, from my perspective, detract from the strength of the shapes. This is not the case in your second photograph.
