I would say, Dave, for this type of shot to work well, the detail should be killed much more with a big stopper.

Or the detail becomes the point.

Thanks for the link, Isaac. He takes some curious photographs and spouts some astonishing drivel.

I agree with Slobodan about the benefit of a longer exposure, Dave.

Nice, I do agree on a bit longer exposure time.

But then it would be just an abstract. Not that there's anything wrong with an abstract, but you couldn't hear only the sound of the sea, you'd hear the sound of one hand clapping.

He takes some curious photographs and spouts some astonishing drivel.

Like this - "What the early photographer gained from the study of nature, now people tend to rely on the computer or machines for. That’s not good enough. You need something more than that." - and this - "Photography is like a found object. A photographer never makes an actual subject; they just steal the image from the world. So, it’s basically a found object." ?

Of course, instead of posting jpgs to the LuLa forum, Hiroshi Sugimoto's images are in galleries and museums -- J. Paul Getty Museum, Fraenkel Gallery, Gagosian Gallery, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Metropolitan Museum of Art… ;-)

Like this ...

You're missing the point, old chap, I assume deliberately. Picking the odd vaguely reasoned remark (not, I notice, from his own web site, to which you posted the link) doesn't undermine the comment I made; and nor does directing me to galleries which have exhibited his photographs. Or did you take "curious" to be an insult?

You're missing the point, mate, perhaps deliberately.

You made a dismissive comment without reference to anything in particular.

Thanks Guys, you always get a truly honest critique here at Lula, which I like and positively encourage of course..  :)

I agree, a longer exposure would have flattened out the sea completely, but I wasn't really going for that flat out look and if I am totally honest, that sort of consideration wasn't in my mind or in any way why I took the shot, although I did happen to have my Vari- ND filter mounted on the lens, from the previous shots I had been taking of the sunset. It was just the soft light in the sky about 20 minutes after the sun had set and the hypnotic sound of the sea lapping on the shore around me, with no other sounds or person around me that I was trying to capture.

This isn't a thought out sort of shot, but just a reaction to what was happening around me type of shot, although I agree, technically it can be said to have some shortcomings, but it was captured as a response to an emotional feeling rather than a technical exercise.

Have I done wrong by shooting it this way, should I always try to shoot from the head rather than from the heart?

Dave  :)

Yes Slobodan, I am definitely a product of the flower power era I am afraid - peace and love (etc) .. ;)
