HP Z3100 carriage lubrication oil
« on: April 11, 2014, 01:01:56 pm »

There was another thread on this topic, but the last post was back in 2007. The forum software suggested starting a new thread.

My 44-inch Z3100 is squeaking badly as the print head carriage moves back and forth, resulting in awful banding. I've never done any maintenance on it. I set out to find a source for the specialty Nye 179 oil that was mentioned in the older LuLa thread. Fortunately, I found one.

For $59.95 USD (plus shipping), I purchased one ounce of Nye 179 oil from TAI Lubricants (www.lubekits.com) in Hockessin, Delaware. According to Massachusetts-based Nye, TAI is the only source for small-volume orders in all of North America. I'm very glad that I found this source, as HP (not surprisingly) has been its usual totally useless self. The man at TAI, Tom Madden, was very helpful, even noting that he had sold this same oil to other HP "plotter" owners in the past.

I'm also glad gasoline isn't this expensive.

The lightest oil in the Nye Hobbyist Lubricant Kit has the same properties and is easy to get.

About $30, a grease and two oils, 2 ounces each.
