What's all this silliness about St. Patrick's Day when no one mentioned St. David's Day, March 1st. ;D

I much prefer St. Eric's Day, which occurs 365 days a year (366 in leap years).  ;)

Today is “Evacuation Day” in Suffolk County (Boston, MA), and that means schools and government facilities are closed.  Nowhere else in the state is this holiday observed.

So what is Evacuation Day? On March 17, 1776, George Washington had fortifications and cannons placed on Dorchester Heights. The British troops occupying Boston at the time realized they were outgunned.

History.com tells us what happened next:

Realizing their position was now indefensible, 11,000 British troops and some 1,000 Loyalists departed Boston by ship on March 17, sailing to the safety of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The bloodless liberation of Boston by the Patriots brought an end to a hated eight-year British occupation of the city.

Getting the British to evacuate from Boston was a major victory for the Continental Army. Less than two months later, the colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. Boston established Evacuation Day in 1901. Like Bunker Hill Day (June 17 this year), Evacuation Day is strictly a Boston-area affair.

Saint David (Welsh: Dewi Sant; c. 500 – c. 589) was a Welsh bishop of Menevia during the 6th century; he was later regarded as a saint and as the patron saint of Wales.

My Welsh mother always sent St. David's Day cards.  I should take up the tradition.  I wasn't just making a joke using my name.
