Prof. George A. Lopez stands beside Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., president emeritus of the University of Notre Dame. The two men were attending a Hesburgh Lecture in Ethics and Public Policy given by Congressman Lee Hamilton. The annual Hesburgh Lecture in Ethics and Public Policy, established by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies in 1995, honors Father Hesburgh. Photo taken on March 22, 2005 in the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, United States of America.
When I took this photo with a Canon 300D (Digital Rebel) back in 2005 I was at the beginning of my photographic journey. Back then I knew this composition was good, but I lacked the post-processing skills and vision to do anything decent with it. So it just sat there among my other photos from that time, most of which were worse than mediocre. These days I'm more experienced and the software tools are better. I very much hope I did a satisfactory job with this, because frankly I am in awe of both men. Father Hesburgh has been an extraordinary figure in American public life. In recognition of his life's work, he has 150 honorary degrees, for instance, more than anyone else has ever received. And Prof. Lopez is a brilliant peace studies educator and communicator. I'm sure all of us can remember a gifted teacher who touched our lives in some profound manner. Prof. Lopez is one of those teachers.
