Horizontal or Vertical
« on: March 14, 2014, 02:19:42 pm »

I'm not sure about these... Anyone have a preference for the vertical or horizontal?

(I'm not sure this is going to work.  I've attached two images and I assume they will be visible, but the preview function doesn't show how they will appear.  Oh well.  Here goes nuthin.)

Jagatal,

I am really enjoying the dialogue between the organic and the inorganic but in both the portrait and the landscape orientations I feel that there is a need to crop in order to vary the weight of each top make a more concise statement of balance.

I think the horizontal works. The dark branch does balance it out and leads the eye.

I would try rotating the portrait version so the bridge is at the same angle as the top image - then you may see a clear winner.

I like the concrete tree - we know its a bridge but it could be a giant sculpture of a tree.

It says something to me about natural beauty and man made function.

SQUARE -- might work

That's exactly what I was wondering. Both the above leave something out.

Thanks for doing my work for me.  I agree the square cropping works better.  :)

After my first slightly silly remark, I reconsidered the various options.
And I think you really have the choice.
I would not say this or that is actually better.
You have the movement upwards , the high towering bridge - this is one statement.
Then you have the street on top of it moving into the distance, supported by the branch,
which is also cutting into it on the left - so it supports and contradicts in the same moment.
The smaller trees are also cutting into it on the right.

So - do you want to emphasize the height of the bridge, a proud building so to say?
For this I'd crop vertical.

Do you want to emphasize the road leading into the distance?
I'd say horizontal in that case.

Do you want to emphasize natures lines cutting into the man made structures?
I think square would work well here.

Just for the fun of it I added my suggestion of a round image border, which I call "Predators View",
imagining some beast lurking in the dark, maybe its the Jabberwock waiting to jump out and have the soft ingredients of a car as a snack,
thinking its an edible snail ...

Cheers

Edible snails need the under side of the bridge as something to aspire to.  You have darkened it away in your predatory passion and the beast may go hungry.

Round and square are two edges of the same coin.
