Need help with workflow to prepare images for web
« on: March 09, 2014, 04:04:00 pm »

I am uploading pictures to a gallerie I created in Behance, some end up looking great on the web, but some others are completely trashed, shifting on hues and saturation.
I shoot Raw, all my processing and filing is kept as 16 bit  Tiff's or psd's in  Pro Photo RGB
I have an action in PS for converting to jpeg that seems to work perfect 50% of the time and trash them the other 50% of the time, so something must be twisted
I rarely upload images so maybe my workflow is at flow to convert them before upload.

Can anyone help me with a step by step conversion routine to get the images ready for the web?    Please?

Here are the steps I use.  I suspect you are already employing this workflow, but check your action.

from either file format, flatten the image.
resize the image to appropriate pixel dimensions.
convert color space to sRGB
convert to 8 bit mode.
save as jpeg.

I can't think of a reason why it should work sometimes and not others.

Resize, sharpen (if required). Convert to sRGB. Embed profile. Done.

Even so, many websites strip embedded profiles. This means trouble for those who have a wide gamut monitor. The remedy for that is to use Firefox with color management set to mode 1, which assigns sRGB for the missing profile. That has the added benefit of ensuring full color management for everybody in all scenarios, no more of that "close enough" nonsense.

Is there any reason why you do not use Photoshop Save for Web conversion?

Save for Web is in the File menu list.  AFAIK it should be available in even fairly old versions of PS.
